Abstract

429,635. Magazine gramophones. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Blyth Road, Hayes, Middlesex, and THOMPSETT, H. A., 26, Castlebar Park, Ealing, London. Jan. 22, 1934, No. 2248. Addition to 419,299. [Class 40 (ii)] In a magazine gramophone as claimed in the parent Specification, means are provided to enable the motor to be started and an automatic cycle of operations initiated by a single manual operation which does not involve handling the reproducer. The said automatic cycle comprises lifting the pick-up arm, swinging it outwards, feeding a record from the magazine to the turntable, swinging the pick-up arm to a position over the edge of the record and finally lowering it on to the record, and it is effected by a number of cams on a shaft 19 which performs a single revolution during the whole cycle. The shaft 19 is driven by gearing from a disc 2 which is adapted to be clutched in known manner, when required, to the turntable spindle 1. The clutch lever 3 is normally held out of action by means of a detent 9, which is controlled by a three-armed lever 12 coacting with a notched ring 20 on the camshaft 19. When the last record of a series has been played, the machine is stopped, as described in the parent Specification, by depression of a rod 26 by the pick-up arm, the rod operating a switch or brake. According to this invention, the machine is restarted after the magazine has been reloaded, by depressing a knob 38, whereby a lever 32 is rocked, and by lifting the post 26 with the pick-up arm on it allows a lever 28 carrying a mercury switch 27 to tilt and close the motor circuit. At the same time, the lever 32 raises an arm 42 projecting from a bar 41 which is pivoted between brackets 40. The bar 41 being thus rocked thrusts a rod 44 against a pin 47 on the detent 9, so that the detent is moved and allows the clutch lever 3 to engage its driving member 6. This sets the camshaft 19 in motion and initiates the cycle of operations effected by the cams.
