Abstract

429,460. Horse and like velocipedes. KOOI, W. B. VAN DER, 136, Spanjaardslaan, Leeuwarden, Friesland, Holland. Aug. 31, 1934, No. 25115. Convention date, Sept. 23, 1933. [Classes 136 (ii) and 136 (iii)] Relates to a toy riding animal of the kind having a moving saddle and moving stirrups on which the rider simulates riding movements to produce, by means of interconnecting gearing, rotation of the wheels. As shown in the Figure, the saddle 3 is carried on a rod 4 and returning-springs 2, the rod 4 being connected to a crank 5 connected by a free-wheel to the shaft 6. A sprocket on the shaft 6 is connected by a chain to the rear wheel 8. The stirrups 9 are suspended on springs 10 and are connected to cranks 11 connected to the shaft 6 by free-wheel means, the ends of the cranks being guided in curved slots in the sides of the animal. A further propelling action is derived from pulling and releasing a loop 14 on a cable, running over pulleys 13, connected to a free-wheel crank 12 on the shaft 6. A returning spring 15 is provided. Backward motion is effected by a foot lever 17 which slides in a slot 17<a> and is connected to a crank 16 having a free-wheel connection with the shaft 6. This freewheel, and, if desired, the other free-wheels on the shaft 6, are of a known type in which the pawl is normally out of engagement with the ratchet teeth and is brought into engagement during the first part of the movement of the crank. The lever 17 may also be used for braking. Steering is effected by means which swing one fore leg forward and the other backward on pivots 21, the wheel axle having ball ends engaging in socket bearings to permit this. The swinging of the fore legs is effected by cranked levers 22 pivoted at 21 and having upstanding ends 23 which pass through bushes 24 connected by a chain which passes around sprockets 26, 27. The ends of the bridle 28 are connected by flexible members 29 with the chain, so that pulling on one side of the bridle will effect the swinging of the legs and, consequently, the steering.
