Abstract

428,764. Electro-medical appliances ; tooth filings ; disinfectants; surgical instruments. KRUSE, W., and FISCHER, M. J., 24, Liebigstrasse, Leipsic, Germany. Aug. 15, 1933, No. 22789. [Classes 81 (i) and 81 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] Oligodynamically active silver or chlorine is produced within dilute chloride containing electrolytes of a strength of not more than N /5 by electric currents derived from a source of from 3 to 30 volts acting on anodes of silver or non- corrodible metals such as platinum or " V2a " alloy, the voltage, superficial area and distance apart of the electrodes, and other factors, being so chosen that current densities of at least one-tenth of an ampere per 100 sq. cm. are obtained. The substances may be produced on silvered surgical instruments to render them actively antiseptic by making them the cathode of an electrolytic bath containing sodium chloride. In the Figure a hand lamp battery is connected to carriers 10, 11, for anodes 12 and cathodes 13, a wire anode being coated with oligodynamically active substance by being placed in electrolyte and being inserted into the root of a tooth as part of a filling; the wire may be reactivated by applying a ball-ended anode thereto, a cathode being held against the gum. By means of the invention, using a silver anode, an antiseptic n/500 hydrochloric acid solution having a silver content of 1 to 3 parts in a thousand can be obtained and stabilized with a protective colloid ; or if the concentration of the electrolyte is increased to n/10-n/20 a finely divided active powder is obtained. Physiological salt solutions (0À6 to 0À9 per cent) and hypo- and hyper-tonic solutions for medical purposes can also be sterilized by means of non-corrodible anodes. Specifications 267,058, 276,254, [both in Class 49], 291,177, 334,627, [both in Class 81 (ii)], and 384,466 are referred to.
