428,519. Filters. WHITFIELD, J. W., and WHITFIELD, T. D., (trading as WHITFIELD BROS.), 168, Liverpool Road, and CHAPMAN, H., 34, Kitchener Avenue, both in Cadishead, Lancashire. Oct. 2, 1934, No. 28128. [Class 46] A filter for the removal of colloidal and suspended solid matter contained in water, sewage, &c., comprises a tray or frame carrying a series of narrow, straight, flat, strips or plates of rigid material having a polished or smooth surface and arranged parallel to one another, the strips being supported on their edges and disposed side by side with their smooth top edges all in the same horizontal plane and with capillary spaces between them, or with narrow spaces between them filled with felt or similar material. It is stated that the smooth top edges acting in conjunction with one another tend to repel colloidal matter leaving a layer of colloid-free liquid which is withdrawn by the capillary action of the sides of the strips. Each tray comprises a frame A, Fig. 1, having a perforated base a and unperforated ends and sides a<2>. The strips B may be arranged in two series separated by a division plate a<3>. Their ends may fit into grooves in the frame A. The strips may be of glass, glazed earthenware, polished ebonite, enamelled metal, anti-corrosive metal, or plain metal. A filtering unit may comprise a number of trays assembled over a filtrate collecting chamber D, Fig. 6, provided with outlets d' and with connections for flushing out the filter with fresh water. A travelling band E provided with rubber scrapers e may be provided for removing the colloidal matter collected on the trays.
