Abstract

427,568. Uniting by fusion. ELIN AKT.-GES. FUR ELEKTRISCHE INDUSTRIE, 1, Volksgartenstrasse, Vienna. Dec. 19, 1933, Nos. 35772, 35773, and 35774. Convention dates, Dec. 19, 1932, March 4, 1933, and Nov. 15, 1933. [Class 83 (iv)] In automatic arc welding with coated rod electrodes a number of electrodes are rigidly connected with one another and the current conducted thereto only at intervals, the current supply and feeding means being so constructed that uninterrupted fusion of the electrodes is effected without leaving residual waste parts. Conducting clamps 3, 3<a>, 3<b>, may be rigidly or removably fixed to a metal band, wire, rope or chain &c., preferably of copper or its alloys, connected to the source of current and driven by rolls 1, 1 or by toothed rolls 6 in dependence on the voltage of the arc. During feed of the rod 4 by the clamp 3 the rod 5 may be connected to the rod 4 by screwing, dovetailing, pinning, or soldering, and the clamp 3 removed before it reaches the lower limit of its stroke. The electrode core may be bared at the region of the clamp or pins connected to the clamps may be inserted through transverse holes in the core. In a modification the electrodes may be fed by rolls 1, Fig. 2, the current conducting clamps 3, 3a sliding along a fixed contact bar 7. In a further form, Fig. 3, pins 14 engaging in holes in the electrodes 13 either at the overlapped or bevelled ends thereof or at other parts pass between water cooled spring-pressed current conducting bars 15 into a screwed spindle 9 driven by bevel and worm gear from a motor 12 operating in dependence on the arc. In order to enable electrodes to be used in which there is a variation in the distances between the pins, the upper end of the screw may have wide grooves to facilitate entry of the pins and the lower end 17, Fig. 6, is keyed on the part 18 and slidable thereon under control of a spring 19. When the upper pin passes into the thread of normal pitch, the part 17 is pressed down and when the lower pin leaves the part 17, the latter is pressed back by the spring. The pins may be replaced by plates 21, Fig. 8 clamped between the ends of the electrodes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that long electrodes having a length which is a multiple of that of the spindle 9 may be used provided with pins 14 at intervals, and that electrodes in ring form with pins at intervals may also be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
