Abstract

427,541. Columns. RIDLEY, M. N., 82, Harold Terrace, Burley, Leeds. Sept. 25, 1933, No. 6828/35. Divided out of 427,473, [Group XXI]. [Class 20 (iv)] A column, stanchion, or like structure, comprises a tube which is constructed of sheeting 1<a> of plain, perforated, or expanded metal, formed with dovetail corrugations 3 arranged longitudinally of the structure, and is reinforced by internal transverse or diagonal bracing members 18, as shown in Fig. 2. The tube, which may be of circular or rectangular cross-section, may be further strengthened by a circumferential reinforcement 14 and by internal rings 15, and a concrete or like filling 9 may be provided. Each bracing member 18 may be bolted to the tube, or it may be secured by extending its ends through the opposite walls of the tube, or by means of a cement key 19 which engages a dovetail corrugation and a part of the bracing member projecting through the wall of the tube. A hollow structure may be formed of two concentric tubes 1, 1<a>, which are connected by radial bracing 18 as shown in Fig. 1 and are provided with a concrete filling 9. The outer tube 1 may be reinforced by bars 14 which are threaded through the corrugations 3 and are welded or otherwise connected at their ends. An additional or alternative reinforcement for the tube 1 consists either of a wire bracing or external rings or sheets 15. A further form of hollow column comprises two concentric tubes l, l<a>, Fig. 4, of square cross-section, with a concrete filling 9, and this construction may be modified by providing internal bracing members for the inner tube 1<a> and also, if desired, filling the inner tube with concrete. The column shown in Fig. 6 is of square cross-section, with flattened corners, and is reinforced by straps 15<a> which extend diagonally across the corners and are secured at one or more points to each wall of the tube by bolts 20 co-operating with cupped portions of the tube. External reinforcing rings 15 may also be provided. A series of diagonal straps 15<a> may be employed as shown in Fig. 7, together with corner straps 23, and the inner straps 15<a> are secured to an inner tube 1<a>, which may be additionally connected to the outer tube by bracing 18. A concrete filling 9 may be provided in either of the columns shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The tubes may be formed in one continuous length and width of sheeting or in units or sections detachably or otherwise secured together by lapping, butting, or nesting, or by the provision of flanges. Uncorrugated sheets may be fixed to either or both faces of the tubes. The outer surfaces of the tubes may be rendered with cement &c., and in the case of hollow structures, the inner faces may be similarly treated.
