[Class 142 (i)] [See also Group VIII] A selective controlling device for electrically operated brocade looms, card-cutting machines, or knitting-machines, comprises a series of pivoted latches 25 which are selectively operated, by a movable electromagnet 20, to release one or more pivoted elements 27, movement of the latter, under action of a spring 30, causing a rod 32 to position its associated harness hook 33 in the path of a vertically movable griffe 34. In the construction shown, four electromagnets are carried by a frame 19 which is non-rotatably mounted on a shaft 18, but is slidable thereon past the latches 25 under the action of a screw-operated frame 17, the screw 16 being driven by gearing 51-45 from a motor 44. The frame 17 carries brushes 21 for engagement with bus-bars 15 forming part of a circuit which includes a battery 13 and a photo-electric cell 5, the latter being adapted to register the light and dark portions on a design 1. The design is carried by a sliding board which is moved in synchronism with the magnet by a cam 55 on a shaft 56 which is driven by worm gearing 54, 53 from the shaft 18, the latter being driven, through gears 52, 51, by the shaft 16. A ratchet device 59 is provided for moving the board transversely. The selected elements 27 are restored to normal latch-engaging position, at the end of each selection and at the beginning of the upward movement of the griffe 34, by a cam operated restoring member 60. The latches 25 may be arranged on both sides of the rotary magnet 20 and the latter may be replaced by a single travelling electromagnet. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a controlling device comprising a number of fixed electromagnets each adapted to operate a latch 25. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
