Abstract

427,072. Surgical injection and drainage appliances. SALVATI, A. T., and SALVATI, A. A., 31, de Julio, Bernal, Buenos Aires. July 26, 1934, No. 21913. [Class 81 (ii)] Needles, cannulas, trocars, and like instruments used in making intravenous injections or for withdrawing blood comprise a hollow duct portion for puncturing a vein, a head portion, and fixing means adapted to be connected with said head portion and to be secured to an external part of the body by strapping for holding the instrument in its inserted position. The duct portion is adapted to be closed by a removable mandrel. The enlarged head 2 of a needle 3 is slotted to receive a lug 5 formed on a plate 1 and pivoted on a pin 7. Alternatively, a universal or other articulated joint may be employed. The plate 1 is secured to the body by bandages, adhesive tape, or strapping. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, the needle head is grooved at 15 to engage the edges of a slot 12 formed in the upstanding member 10 of a U-shape element whose legs 1<a>, 1<b> are connected by a tie 13 and carry guides 14 for the securing strapping. In a further embodiment, the securing means consist of a pair of brackets fixed one on either side of the needle head. The duct portion 17 of the instrument, Fig. 1, may be straight or curved and can be closed by a mandrel 18 which may have a projection 18<a> engaging a slot in the mouth of the instrument to prevent rotation. In the case of a cannula, a sharp mandrel is first introduced for puncturing the vein and is then replaced by a blunt mandrel until the injection or blood withdrawal is effected.
