Abstract

426,667. Tin-openers. GRODETZKY, R., POLAK, B., GRODETZKY, R., and SCHLEISSNER, P., (trading as GRODETZKY & POLAK, [Firm of]), 31, Skretova, Prague. Dec. 2, 1933, No. 33957. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 24, 1934.] [Class 66] A tin-opener, of the type in which a supporting shield 4 provided with a pivoted cutter 5 is guided along the rim of the tin by the rolling of a toothed wheel 3 mounted on the shield, is characterized by a clamping jaw 6 arranged behind the cutter in regard to the direction of movement of the shield, which jaw, pressing against the rim of the tin as shown in dotted lines, holds the cutter on the tin. As shown, the cutter is integral with the jaw. The hole in the shield through which passes the rivet 9, which constitutes a hinge for the jaw, is provided with a recess 13 projecting beyond its circular shape, into which recess the material of the head of the rivet has been forced. The jaw is thus held fixed in a certain position when the cutter is out of use. There is a little vertical play at the hinge. To place the opener on the tin the shield is placed loosely over the rim and against an abutment 11, as shown. Pressure is then applied in the direction of the arrow 10 on the jaw, the material of the rivet occupying the recess is forced out of it, and the jaw moves to the dotted line position, clamping the shield on the tin. To cut the tin the wheel 3 is rotated by means of a handle 2, the shield moves in the direction of the arrow A, and the jaw pivots, riding down a ramp 8 and abutting a stop 7, the cutter 5 being thus plunged into the tin and positioned in the lee of the rim. In a modification, there is no vertical play at the hinge 9. In another modification the cutter 5 and jaw 6 are separate and have a common pivot on the shield, the jaw being provided with a lug which, when the jaw turns, takes the cutter with it. The appliance may be used to cut the side wall of the tin.
