Abstract

426,007. Regulating compression. GRESHAM & CRAVEN, Ltd., GRESHAM, J. N., and ARNOLD, C., Ordsall Lane, Salford. Oct. 10, 1933, No. 27862. [Class 8 (i)] [See also Group XXXIV] Vacuum or compressed air brakes comprise a train pipe b and a releasing pipe c which controls a clutch by which an auxiliary exhauster or compressor p is brought into operation on a change-speed gear by which the ordinary exhauster or compressor is speeded up, to effect rapid release of the brakes, the pipe c being exhausted from the train pipe b by a connection f containing a check valve g. The vehicle engine a drives the main exhauster m through a gearbox n. A governor o on the driving shaft v from the vehicle engine operates a cut-off valve u when the engine speed is above idling, which cuts off the pipe c from the clutchoperating diaphragm chamber t and connects the chamber below the diaphragm to a vacuum reservoir j. The chamber above the diaphragm is permanently connected to the reservoir j. When the brakes are applied pipes b, c are connected to atmosphere and when the brakes are released and the engine is idling, the increased pressure in the pipe c operates the actuator t which by means of an arm s engages the clutch to bring the auxiliary exhauster p into operation. The vacuum in the pipe c is restored only gradually through a restriction h until it is sufficient to operate the actuator t to declutch the exhauster p. The pipe c is provided with a capacity reservoir i through which the reservoir f is exhausted. A modification is shown in which the actuator t operates a change-speed gear to accelerate the main pump.
