Abstract
351,187. Operating motor-vehicle clutches. WINDELINCKX, M., 379B, Chaussee de Gand, Brussels. May 14, 1930, No. 14834. Convention date, May 15, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] In means for effecting declutching on motor vehicles by the suction of the engine, a piston 9, Fig. 1, connected with lost-motion to the clutch-pedal 10, moves in a cylinder 4 which can be put into communication with the induction-pipe 7 or the atmosphere by a slide-valve 19, having vacuum and air ports 21, 20 divided by a partition 26, the valve being raised automatically against a spring 24 or gravity by the suction in the pipe 7 when the engine is throttled. Other types of valve operated by a vacuum piston may be used. Detachable nozzles may be fitted to the air-inlet 8 and suction side 7 of the valve to vary the speed of action to suit the clutch springs. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the valve 19 may be replaced by a three-way cock or other valve operated by a hand-lever on the dashboard &c., or by a pushbutton on the change-speed lever &c. In a modification, the accelerator-pedal operates a piston valve, and the clutch pedal may be omitted. The valve may alternatively be coupled to the brake pedal or change-speed or throttle lever. Means may be provided gradually to restore the air-pressure when the engine is stopped. An auxiliary pump may replace the engine suction. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
