Abstract

425,513. Delivering measured quantities of liquids. MARTIN, H., 153, Broome Street, New York, U.S.A. May 26, 1934, No. 15762. [Class 106 (v)] A device for delivering measured quantities of liquid from a bottle or like container comprises a tubular portion 11 having an apertured partition 13 for trapping a predetermined quantity of liquid when the device is in an upright position the aperture 14 serving to drain off excess liquid and being of such a size that liquid below the partition will be retained when the device is inverted. The partition is conical and has an angle of approximately 66‹ between the walls whilst the aperture is approximately <9>/32 of an inch in diameter. As shown in Fig. 1, the device forms the outlet of a container 10. On inverting and shaking liquid passes through the opening 14, on righting the measured quantity is separated as shown and on again inverting the measured quantity may be run off, whilst the remainder is retained by surface tension at the aperture. In modified forms the device is separate from the container and adapted to be screwed thereto. In one form, the conical partition screws on to the neck of the bottle or container and on a neck portion of the partition is screwed a cap member which receives the measured quantity and which may be used as a drinking cup. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the neck of the container or bottle 55 is formed with a bead 56, a screwthread 58 and an external enlargement 59 extending about a third of the way round the neck, the ends of the enlargement forming abutments for the ends of a strip of metal spring 70 which extends round the other two thirds. The measuring device is formed with a screw-thread and with ratchet teeth 62 adapted to be engaged by tongues bent up from the spring 70 so that the device may be screwed on to the bottle but cannot be turned in the reverse direction to be removed from the bottle. In a further modification, the measuring device in addition to an internal locking device similar to that described above, is provided with an external locking device, Fig. 9, comprising tongues 87, bent inwardly from a metal collar 81 surrounding the bottle neck and engaging teeth 97 formed on the exterior of a skirt portion 90 depending from the measuring device.
