Abstract
425,199. Knitting-machines. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Lawson, R. H.; 55, Cooke Street, Pawtucket, and Cloutier, A. N.; 495, Broad Street, Lonsdale, both in Rhode Island, U.S.A.) April 17, 1934, No. 11562. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1933. [Class 74 (ii)] In association with means for separately knitting two or more yarns at one time, a yarn controlled tension equalizing device is provided to enable split hosiery fabric of uniform appearance to be made. If any yarn tends to be fed at a faster rate than another, the device resists this tendency by holding back the one and releasing the other yarn. The device consists of a bracket 111, freely movable on vertical pivots, yarn guide arms 114, 115 and co-operating yarn-engaging elements 119, 120. The yarns 11, 12 pass through eyes in and determine the position of the bracket. Each yarn pursues a more or less tortuous path through the bracket 111 &c. according to its tension relative to the other yarn and tends to set the bracket in a position where the difference of tension is a minimum. In a modified construction the yarns 11, 12 pass between intermeshing rolls which act in the same way. One of the yarns is withdrawn at predetermined times e.g. during reciprocation. Overlapping rotary members 48, 49 mounted on brackets 92, 93, one of which can be moved away during heel and toe work may be employed as described in Specification 425,182, to indicate visually whether the yarns are being fed at the same or different rates. In another form, when the disc 48 moves away from its yarn 12, the same yarn is moved away from the feed rolls. The length of loop knitted at the various feeding stations may be simultaneously varied, by a cam 58 on the pattern drum 54. A frame 63 attached to the lower part of a bell-crank 65 bears on the cam 58. The horizontal arm 71 supports a slide 73 on which is mounted the auxiliary stitch cam block 4. The frame 63 also controls, through parts 79 .. 89, the vertical position of a bar 90, to which is fastened the main cam block.
