[Class 40 (v)] [See also Group XXXVIII] In apparatus controlled by variations in an electric current produced by controlled variations in intensity of light falling upon a light-sensitive substance, a translucent element moulded, cast, or otherwise formed of varying thickness from point to point in predetermined manner is traversed across the light beam to produce the desired modulation in light intensity, and thereby of the output current. For example, a replica in paraffin wax, celluloid, gelatine, or other translucent material is used for modulating the light intensity for controlling a cutting-machine to reproduce a three-dimensional object. In the cutting-machine shown in Fig. 1, a flat transparency 2 of varying thickness from point to point, according to the shape chosen, is traversed past a slot 11 between a light source 8 and a light-sensitive element 9 associated with a thermionic amplifier 14. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, a transparent replica 2 is formed with a cylindrical bore to receive a tube 10 containing a light source 8 for action through slits 11, 13 upon a photo-electric cell 9. The replica is moved on the tube 10 so that it is traced spirally by the light source, and the intensity of the light reaching the photo-electric cell is modulated according to the thickness of replica traversed, whereby work similarly moved in a cutting-machine is reproduced to the same external shape.
