Abstract

424,797. Valve gear. STEVENS, A. H., 5, Quality Court, Chancery Lane, London.- (Wilcox-Rich Corporation ; 9771, French Road, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) Nov. 9, 1933, No. 31253. [Class 7 (vi)] A valve-actuating rocker with hydraulic means for taking up clearance comprising a piston operating against oil pressure in a cylinder in one arm of the rocker, means being provided coacting with the piston whereby a part of the rocker-operating force is transmitted directly through the rocker arm and part through the oil chamber. In the form shown, one arm 12 of the rocker is bored to receive a plunger 38 which is formed with a wedge surface 45 engaging a corresponding incline on a plunger 44, bearing on the top of the push rod 14, oil being admitted behind the plunger 38 past a ball valve 30. The oil is taken from the usual lubricating- passage 24 in the rocker pivot, from which it escapes through a hole 23 and annular groove 22. The ball is retained by a disc 33, between which and a corresponding disc 36 bearing against the plunger 38, is arranged a spring 35. The disc 33 is formed with grooves in its edge for the passage of oil to the chamber behind the plunger 38, which chamber is kept of small dimensions. Preferably, the discs 33 and 36 are formed with projections 34, 37 which meet when the compensating- mechanism is collapsed to its limit, the spring 35 being also so designed as to fill the annular space around the projections 34, 37 when fully compressed, so that all the oil is expelled, together with any air or gas present. An air escape passage may, however, be provided as shown at 29. In a modification, the plunger 44 does not project from the rocker arm, but is retained within a recess in the arm by a small flange formed after the plunger is in position. The proportion of the force transmitted directly through the rocker arm is varied by alteration of the angle of the wedge.
