[Class 39 (iii)] In apparatus wherein the heating element is arranged in a metal enclosure, and the conducting leads are enclosed by a tube attached to the enclosure, an airtight joint is made at the outer ends of the tube. In an immersion heater 6, the joint is effected by means of a screwed fitting 2, a ring 4, and packing 3. The packing may be a cement. In a cooking plate the end of the tube is closed by an insulating plug of rubber, cement or the like, carrying the supply terminals. In the case of a vessel fitted with an external heater, the joint is made by a rubber or metal sleeve surrounding the supply leads and the tube. With a metal sleeve, the rubber covering of the supply leads is thickened in the region of the sleeve. The element enclosure may be filled with inert gas.
