Abstract

Material suitable for furnishing a beater is prepared by adding to a moist mass of fibre such as sulphate, sulphite or soda pulp, rag stock, asbestos or textile fibres, ingredients capable of forming a resin under heat in the presence of a catalyst, heating the mixture while maintaining mechanical mixing and then rapidly dropping the temperature to stop the reaction while the resin is still in a heat fusible state preferably by adding cold water to the mixture. Suitable ingredients include a solution of formaldehyde, a phenolic body and an ammonia catalyst with or without an alkali salt of a weak acid. In an example, unbleached sulphite pulp is mixed with water and there is added to the mixture in turn soda ash, cresylic acid, formalin and ammonia and the final mixture heated and then mixed with cold water. Calcium stearate may be added to the mixture to enable the final product to separate readily from the moulds. Plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate may be added. Paper and boards made from the product may be used in the manufacture of laminated products such as sheets used for punching out small mechanical parts or electrical insulators, for the manufacture of shaped and drawn articles such as trays, in the fabrication of decorated panels used for table tops, interior trim, and imitation wood panelling.
