Abstract
423,952. Change-speed gearing. NORTH, O. D., 76, Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea, HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd., 52, High Holborn, both in London. Aug. 17, 1933, No. 23032. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed gearing suitable for vehicles comprises two parallel shaft lines 1, 2 each line consisting of shafts positively clutchable together, and means for obtaining more speeds than there are gear pairs, all operable by a manual selector. The arrangement of Fig. 10 comprises four pairs of gears and yields six speeds, with an additional reverse. The driving shaft line 1 comprises shafts 1<b>, 1<a>, connectable by a clutch 1<c>. The driven shaft line 2 comprises shafts 2b, 2<a> connectable by a clutch 2<c>, which also entrains a pair B<4>, A4. A double clutch 1<e> entrains a pair A<2>, B<2> or a pair A<3>, B<3>, and a clutch 2<e> entrains a pair A<1>, B<1>. The gear pairs may alternatively be entrained by sliding into mesh. A one-to-one or direct drive is obtained through the pair A<3>, B<3>. An overdrive results by driving through the pair A<2>, B<2>. Two reduced drives are effected through the pair A<1>, Bl and through the pair A<4>, B<4>, respectively. The extra speeds are two triple reductions, one of which is shown in Fig. 1, through the pair A<1>, B<1>, the pair B<2>, A<2>, and the pair A<4>, B<4>. The other triple reduction is obtained by substituting the pair B<3>, A<3> for the pair B<2>, A<2>. Reversed drive is effected by sliding the gear A<1> into mesh with an idler cluster illustrated in Fig. 8, not shown, connecting to the gear B<1>. There are five forks 22, Fig. 11, on sliding rods 15 arranged around a shaft 12, Fig. 12, which is turned to select and slid axially to operate. A finger 13 fast on the shaft 12 is turned to engage bosses 14 on the rods 15, each in turn, and a hand lever is moved to positions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and R, Fig. 9, in a gate shaped as shown to effect the six forward speeds and the reverse. A locking plate 7, Fig. 11, turns with the finger 13 to lock the rods 15 not selected, while the finger slides through the plate. A detent lever 17, Fig. 12, supported on a fixed bracket 16, locks the parts in gear positions.
