Abstract

423,457. Spectacle lenses. WITHERS, J. S., 51, Chancery Lane, London.-(Singer, N. ; 119, West 57th Street, New York, U.S.A.) Nov. 20, 1933, No. 32367. [Class 97 (i)] Spectacle lenses with a number of fields of different lightabsorptive qualities are produced by grinding a laminated lens blank of concavo-convex form and comprising layers of glass of different light absorptive properties, the central portion of one or in some cases both of the outer layers being removed. The lens blank may be formed by securing layers of glass together by a flashing or fusing process and moulding the compound layer to a concavo-convex form as shown. The dotted line shows the extent to which the layer 6 of higher absorptive properties is removed by grinding to provide a clear central area with a full visual field. In a modification the layer of higher absorptive properties may be on the concave side of the blank and its central portion ground away from this side. The central portion of the lens may be tinted but to a lesser extent than the surrounding area. The light absorbent border to the lens eliminates glare due to reflected lightat the edges of the lens.
