Abstract
423,227. Course-recording apparatus. REYMOND, H. C., 10, Rue St. Augustin, Paris. July 19, 1934, No. 21187. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1933. [Class 97 (ii)) [See also Group XXXV] A voltage or current proportionate to the speed of a ship or aircraft is generated and automatically divided by means under compass control into two parts which are proportional to the sine and cosine of the course and actuate volt- or ampere-hourmeters, graduated to indicate the displacements of the ship in longitude and latitude. When a source of continuous current 1 supplying a voltage proportional to the speed is used, two potentiometers 2, 3 with sliding contacts 4, 5 may be connected in parallel to the source. The sliders 4, 5 are actuated through rods 6, 7 by a pin 10 on a disc 11 orientated by a gyro compass repeater 12 and engaging slots 8, 9 mounted at right angles on the rods 6, 7, respectively. The sliders move so that their distances 04, 0<1>5, from the centres of the potentiometers are proportional respectively to the sine and cosine of the course. A volthourmeter 15 connected between the slider 5 and the middle point 16 of a resistance 17 in parallel with resistances 2, 3, may be graduated to indicate the N-5 displacement as a distance or in degrees of latitude. A volthourmeter connected between the slider 4 and the point 16 may be graduated to show the E-W displacement as a distance. An arrangement whereby the E-W displacement may be indicated in degrees of longitude is shown in Fig. 3. The slider 4 is connected through a potentiometer 22 to the point 0 and a slider 23 moved by the latitude meter 15 is connected through a volthourmeter 14 graduated in degrees of longitude to the point 16. When an alternating current generator 18 supplying a singlephase voltage proportional to the speed is used, the generator feeds a fixed frame 19, Fig. 4. Two frames 20, 21 at right angles are rotated together about a diameter of the frame 19 by a compass repeater 12. The frame 21 may be connected to a volthourmeter 15 graduated to indicate N-S displacement as a distance or in degrees of latitude. The frame 20 may be connected to a volthourmeter graduated to indicate E-W displacement as a distance or as shown to a fixed frame 19<1>. In the latter case a frame 20<1> rotated about a diameter of the frame 19<1> by the latitude meter 15 is connected to a volthourmeter 14 graduated in degrees of longitude. The effect of drift or currents may be accounted for by providing the meters 14, 15 with a second winding fed by a device similar to those described but adjusted by hand in accordance with the speed and direction of the drift and currents.
