Abstract

In the production or re-activation of hydrogenating or dehydrogenating catalysts by surface anodic oxidation of nickel, copper or their alloys or mixtures thereof and subsequent reduction, the metal is treated in the form of wire, turnings, gauze, perforated discs, shot or the like, preferably within a cage, and the current density is maintained below 0,05 amps per square inch of a smooth surface externally bounding the metallic mass. In an example, a perforated or gauze cage of nickel or the metal known under the Registered Trade Mark "Monel" 3,5 ft. in length and 6 inches in diameter is filled with 35 lbs. of nickel turnings packed so as to occupy not more than 10--15 per cent of the volume. A canvas sheet is disposed between the cage and the cathode. A solution of sodium carbonate of strength 1--5 per cent, preferably 3 per cent, free from chlorides is employed as electrolyte and is stirred continuously or at intervals, e.g. by rotation of the cage. A current of 40 amps at 3,5--4 volts is employed. Alternatively a horizontal cage may be employed, being preferably so disposed in the cell that gas bubbles formed do not travel through the mass of metal more than twelve inches in rising to the surface of the electrolyte.
