Abstract

422,133. Smokers' ash receptacles. POWER, R. F., 18, Chesterford Gardens, Hampstead, London. July 6, 1933, Nos. 19217, 25012, and 31301. [Class 130] A receptacle for cigarette ends &c. comprises an ash-tray, having an aperture in its bottom, mounted over a container so that the apertured bottom of the ashtray and the container are relatively movable, the container being provided with partitions to form compartments which are successively obturated by the tray, the aperture in the ashtray. exposing one or other of the compartments while the others are closed. As shown in Fig. 2, an ash-tray provided with cigarette rests 8<c> and having an aperture 9 in its part 8 is rotatably mounted on an apertured cover 3 of a sheet metal container 1, which has a removable bottom 2, secured by interrupted threads 2<a>, and is divided into separate compartments by partitions 5a, 5<d>. After a cigarette has been dropped through the aperture 9 into one compartment, the ash-tray is rotated to close that compartment, to extinguish the cigarette and open another compartment. When the aperture 9 is over one of the compartments, either a projection 10<a> on the cover engages one of a number of recesses 10 on the bottom of the tray, or a pin carried by a spring-loaded rod feathered to the tray engages one of a plurality of slots in a central hollow boss on which the tray is pivoted. In a modified construction, a container 11, Fig. 3, is divided into compartments 12<a> .. 12d, by partitions 13<a> .. 13d radiating from a central boss. An ash-tray having an apertured bottom 14 is rotated over the container by a knob 15, which is bored to receive the end of the boss. The knob may be formed as a cigarette rest by having downwardly inclined knife-edged or rounded supports 17 across any adjacent pair of which a cigarette is laid. To prevent the cigarettes from rolling off, the supports have projections 18 at their outer ends. In modifications, (1) the rest is formed by upwardly inclined bars radiating from a central boss, each bar having a knife edge on which a cigarette may be laid, and the boss may be ribbed to provide knife edges between adjacent bars against which the cigarette may lie, and (2) a rest for one cigarette is formed by two knife edges or supports of circular cross-section spaced apart and provided with means to prevent the cigarette rolling off. In the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the ash-tray comprises a movable part, formed by a rotatable bottom 25 having an aperture 26 and a hollow boss 27, and a fixed part, formed by a spider having arms 23, 23<a>, a hub 22 and a rim 24 screwed on to a container 20 which is divided into compartments 21a ... 21d by partitions. The arm 23d houses a brush 30 wide enough to seal the aperture 26 and when the boss is turned until the aperture 26 is beneath the brush housing, the ash &c. collected in front of the brush falls into the compartment 21<c> beneath the brush. Recesses 24<a> in the rim 24 and 28<a> in a knob 28 form cigarette rests. The boss 27 forms a receptacle for igniting means which can be struck on a prepared surface 34 on the sweeper housing. The first Provisional Specification states that a sliding movement may be used between the apertured bottom of the ash-tray and the partitioned container.
