ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 30, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CIGARETTE CHOKING R SNUFFING DEVICE FOR ASH TRAYS This'invention relates to an improved cigarette choking or snufllng device for use in connection and the purpose thereof is to provide a device of this kind which is applicable to any kind of an ash tray, such as may rest on a table or other support and movable from one placeto another thereon, or whether it is mounted on a humidor or a stand.
Ash trays which have depressions with solid bottoms for receiving the lighted end of a cigarette, for the purpose of choking or snuillng the same out are common. However in this type of device the depressions become filled with the cigarette stub or parts of it, then it is necessary to soil ones fingers to remove the stubs and place them in the tray.
Another purpose of this invention is to provide means for actuating movable bottoms in the choking or snuiling out depressions, so that subsequently to choking or snuillng out the lighted end of the cigarette, it is possible to manually actuate said means, impart movement to the movable bottoms, and therefore discharge the stub, which will automatically fall in the ash tray.
Another purpose is to provide means for attaching the ash tray to a humidor or a stand.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of an ash tray, showing cigarette or cigar holders thereon and illustrating the choking cavities or depressions and the means for; actuating the movable bottoms therein.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view in side elevation.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail view of the means for removably attaching the tray to a humidor or other container.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 'of Figure 2.
Figure 6'is a detail view of a portion of the margin of the tray and a portion of the margin oi the wall of the container 2, showing more clearly the construction of the means for guiding the lateral bent ends I l of the arms I! oi the strip ll through the enlarged portions I! of the slots, when the plate 5 is in an unlocked position.
Referring to the drawings I identifies the tray. which in the present instance is supported upon a container 2, the central part of which has a compartment 3 for an absorbent material adapted to be saturated with water acting as a humidor for cigarettes or cigars which may be arranged in the container. The casing of the container 2 as well as the ash tray may be made of any suitable material such as bakelite, porcelain, glass, metal and plastic material of all kinds. The ash tray may be any suitable shape, preferably in the present instance circular as shown, and it has holders 4 for the reception of lighted cigarettes or cigars.
The ash tray has a depending flange 2a which fits down over the casing of the container 2, and at diametrical opposite points adjacent this flange are bosses 2b provided with bushings 20. In addition to the actual bottom 2d of the tray a circular plate 2e is secured to the bosses by means of screws 2g, said screws entering the bushings 2c, which are frictionally fitted or cemented in the bosses. The cylindrical wall of the container 2 at diametrical opposite points have notches 2h, which straddle the bosses, the notches being so located as to guide the tray into its position on the container, for the purpose as hereinafter stated. A plate 5 which is circular is secured by means oi a screw 6 to a central standard I which rises from the center of the humidor 2. The bottom of the container 2 has a threaded bore-l, in which a standard may be connected for supporting the container.
The plate 5 is provided with slots 9, as shown in the plan view, and a U shaped strip in has its arms engaging through the slots 9. The arms of the U shaped strip l0 engage through the circular plate 2c, in order that the right angle extremities of the arms may pass through the slots 9 of the plate 5. In other wbrds the larger portions ll of the slots, when in position to receive the right angle extremities of the arms of the U shaped strip I II the larger portions [2 of the slots are in radial register with the notches 2h 0! the wall of the container 2, so that the tray may fit down onto the'container. and in this instance the right angle extremities H of the arms l3 will pass through the larger portions ofthe slots 9 of the plate 5, and as immediately hereinafter stated the ash tray may be locked to the container. The plate 5 is capable of rotation slightly through the medium of a lever II. In other words by moving the lever ll slightly the larger portions I! of the slots as shown in the' plan view may be positioned so that the arms I: of the U shaped strip in may pass through the slots, and then by rotating the plate 5 back the angular bent ends H may engage under the plate, and thereby lock the ash tray to the container. By having the notches 2k. in radial register with the larger portions I! or the slots 9 ll is positioned. This button is threaded at totheU shspedstrip ll,tosecurethestrip the'hollowed out part II. The button'also to the larger portion 0! the plunger as at 24 The lower end of the reduced section of the plunger has a U shaped terminal 2! in which a pivot pin 2| is mounted, connecting the adjacent ends of the two links 21 to the plunger. These links engage through slots is formed in the arms of the U shaped strip II, and the remote ends of the links are connected by slots and pins 29 and 2! tothe lower ends of the plunger I'l, so that by pressing the plunger 22 downwardly the plungers H (which constitute movable bottoms for the chambers lia formed in the cylindrical ends it) will raise and discharge the choked or snuiied out cigarette. The slots 28a are inclined downwardly away from each other, acting to move the plungers orbottoms II without'binding. i V when finishing smoking a cigarette, the burnt end of the cigarette can be engaged in either of the cylindrical chambers a while the plungers II are in their lowermost positions. Obviously the flre on'the end of the cigarette is choked out and then by depressing the plunger 22, the plungers II will raise and discharge the cigarette butt out into the ash tray.
The invention having been se claimed is:
1. The combination with an as'n tray having a hollowed out portion with open ended chambers at its ends, of a support for the tray, means for removably attaching the tray to the support, movable bottoms in the open ended chambers, and tiltable means housed in the hollowed out portion of the tray and connected to the movable bottoms at right angles thereto for causing the discharge or cigarette stubs.
