Abstract

421,931. Awnings or sunblinds. HESSE, C. J., 134, Nicholson Street, Footscray, Victoria, Australia. March 5, 1934, No. 6875. Convention date, March 3, 1933. [Class 52 (v)] The supporting arms 15 of awnings are slidable on vertical guides 16 at each side and are constructed so that the tension of the blind when extended imparts a turning moment to the arms to cause them to bind in or on the guides and retain the awning in adjusted position. To roll up the awning the arms 15 are turned downwardly slightly and released gradually so that the tension in the blind moves the arms upwardly on the guides. The blind 13 is mounted on a spring roller 10 and has its free end connected to a cross-bar 14 rigidly secured to the arms 15 which are forked at their inner ends to embrace the guide rail 16 and provided with rollers 17 adapted to bind upon the front and rear faces of the rail under the tension of the blind. To release the arms 15 a cord 22 passing to the interior of the building is pulled to overcome the tension of the blind whereupon the arm 15 moves upwards into the position shown in dotted lines and the blind is rolled up. For lowering the blind an operating cord 21 is attached to one of the arms 15 and passes over a pulley 20 at the end of an arm 18 pivoted to a bracket 19 fixed to the window &c., the cord passing through a hole in the bracket 19 to the interior of the building. On pulling the cord 21 the arm 18 is first moved to the horizontal position in which its end abuts against the bracket 19, and the arms 15 are thereupon lowered. When the tension on the cord 21 is relieved the arms 15 are automatically gripped on the uprights 16 and the arm 18 drops to the vertical position. The arms 15 may be telescopic. The guide rails 16 may be curved to allow the arms 15 to take up various angular positions. Instead of having rollers 17, the arms 15 may be provided with forked slotted inner ends adapted to engage the front and rear of the rail, or the inner ends of the arms may be formed into spirals embracing the rail. Fig. 13 shows a modification in which a block 39 fixed to the arm 15 slides in a channel 38 having a horizontal portion at the top ; the tension of the blind tilts the block so as to bind it in the channel. Fig. 12 shows a further modification in which the arm 15 has a rectangular pin 34 rotatable in the round part of a keyhole slot 32 in a bracket 29 slidable on the upright 16 ; on turning the arms 15 into a horizontal position the pins 34 engage the slots 33 to retain the blind in the operative position. The bracket 29 is retained in its raised inoperative position by engaging a slot 36 in the upright 16 under the influence of a spring 37. The roller 10 may be carried by the arms 18 and the free end of the blind fixed to the window &c.
