Abstract
421,508. Air-compressors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. March 16, 1934, No. 8347. Convention date, March 17, 1933. [Class 8 (i)] An air-compressor of the kind having a rotary cylinder and double acting piston and wherein a passage connects the ends of the cylinder which when open unloads the compressor is provided with means such as an oil pump actuated by the compressor for forcing lubricant into the connecting passage to seal it and load the pump. In a refrigerator the compressor comprises a fixed body 25 with cylindrical bore within which is mounted a rotary core 27 driven by the shaft 27a of the electric motor. The rotary member is provided with a transverse cylinder 29 in which is fitted the pump piston 30, the ends of which are curved to conform to the sides of the bore of the cylinder walls. The piston is connected by means of a transverse slot 33 therein engaging a lug 32 on a shaft 31 not in line with that of the driving shaft 27a, whereby reciprocation of the piston relative to the cylinder is effected. The compressor has an intake port 34 in the form of a groove which communicates through a passage 36 and check valve with the intake coil of the refrigerator. The intake 34 and delivery 38 are covered and uncovered at the appro. priate times by the piston. The ends of the cylinder 29 are connected by a longitudinal groove 55 which is intersected by a circum. ferential groove 49 forming part of the circuit of the lubricating pump. When starting up the groove is free and the compressor is unloaded, but on attaining a given speed the oil pressure rises sufficiently to form a seal which checks the communication and the compressor becomes loaded. The pump is constituted by a vane 45 at the bottom of the shaft 31 moving in a cylinder 44 at the bottom of the body 25. The pump is immersed in the oil sump and delivers through a channel 47 in the shaft 31 to the groove 49 and thence to the other parts to be lubricated.
