Abstract
In a machine for operating along a lower peripheral portion of a lasted shoe, the work is held, in a substantially upright position, by the engagement of supporting means with its upper portion, so that its lower part is accessible to the tool which operates around at least a major portion of the shoe periphery, the shoe being rotated during such operation. The locality of operation of the tool is transferred along the shoe periphery at a substantially constant linear velocity, and the shoe may be rotated in one direction through more than one complete revolution, and then reversed for a part of a revolution, so that a certain overlap is effected. Although described with reference to a machine for applying liquid cement to a foxing area, a machine constructed according to the invention may be used for other purposes, e.g., the securing in position of a foxing strip. Shoe holding and moving mechanism.--The shoe is held by a toe-piece 97, Fig. 5, a toothed last pin 103 and a treadle-operated clamping member 124, and is automatically unlocked at the end of the cementing operation. The <PICT:0420806/III/1> <PICT:0420806/III/2> <PICT:0420806/III/3> <PICT:0420806/III/4> <PICT:0420806/III/5> members 97, 103 and 124 are carried by a jack comprising straight side racks 27 and curved end racks driven by a uniformly-rotating pinion 55. The jack moves forward for a little more than one revolution, to produce a variable overlap of cement, and the cement-applying tool is then withdrawn and the movement of the jack reversed to return it to initial position. Foxing area cementing tool.--The curved cement-applying tool 201, Fig. 24, carried by a segment 210, has an excess of cement supplied by a gear pump through the pipe 206 to channels 207. It is mounted for yielding movement towards and away from the shoe, for movement heightwise of the shoe, and for rocking movement, there being always a short gap between the tool and the work. The movement heightwise of the shoe is determined by contact of the shoe bottom with a bottom rest 218, rockable on a pin 219. In addition to the tool which operates along the lower peripheral portion of the shoe, other tools, e.g., for cementing the toe-cap and the shoe bottom, may be provided. Toe-cap cementing tool.--This tool, 401, Figs. 21 and 39, applies cement to the area upon which the toe-cap is to be applied, and includes a circular wick 533. When the shoe is moving, toe forward, the tool 401 delivers a curtain of cement from its concave downwardly-directed nozzle upon the toe portion of the shoe, until the latter encounters a bumper 403, whereupon the nozzle drops upon the shoe and is withdrawn, wiping and smoothing the coating it has just applied, the coil of wire 535 ensuring the retention of a layer of desired and uniform thickness. Bottom cementing tool.--If it is desired to apply cement to the bottom also of the shoe, the ordinary bottom rest 218 is replaced by a bottom rest 609, Fig. 47, comprising a row of cement ports 612 and a following brush 618 to wipe and smooth the applied cement.
