Abstract

<PICT:0420606/III/1> Articles such as sheets of paper, glassine paper, regenerated cellulose, and cellulose acetate, packages, containers and cans, are rendered impervious to water vapour by depositing thereon fine particles of wax and fluxing so that a wax coating having a thickness not greater than \ba1/10\be micron is formed. Suitable waxes include paraffin, beeswax and ozokerite and materials such as stearic acid, stearates and resins may be added. The sheets may be pre-coated with cellulose derivatives or polymerized vinyl compounds admixed with gums, resins, plasticizers, blown oils, dyes, pigments and waxes; a suitable lacquer comprising nitro-cellulose, dibutyl phthalate, blown rapeseed oil, ethyl acetate and benzene. The wax is atomized in an apparatus comprising a heated trough 16 containing for example, paraffin, diluted if desired with toluol, a slowly rotating wheel 18 dipping into the trough 16 and a tangential nozzle 20 through which heated air is blown. Large particles 21 are eliminated from the atomized wax by a baffle arrangement 23 and the residual air-borne particles are deposited on the material, which then passes through a heater 22, which may be provided with air-conditioning means to preserve the flexibility of the product, and a cooling device (not shown). In a modification the atomizing chamber is separate from the depositing chamber and fans are used to circulate the air-borne particles. Both sides of a sheet may be coated by passing it twice through the depositing chamber before fluxing. Specifications 8636/03, 361,790, [Class 140], and 375,194, [both in Group VIII], are referred to.
