Abstract

Paper, leather, sheet cellulose, cotton, and other materials are waterproofed and oilproofed by coating or impregnating them with a derivative of a saturated oxygenated fatty acid, the derivative having a melting point preferably not below 50 DEG C. Driers, drying oils and resins may be incorporated in the coating material which is applied in the molten state. The following examples are given. (1) Castor oil is hydrogenated by agitating it with hydrogen and reduced nickel as catalyst under high pressure and temperature. The filtered oil melts at 84 DEG C. and renders paper waterproof and oilproof. (2) Oxygen is blown into chinawood oil and the blown oil is hydrogenated to form a wax-like substance melting at 65 DEG C. (3) A grease-proof paper for wrapping meat is made by impregnating fabric with a composition prepared by heating hydrogenated castor oil with glycerol. Other substances that can be used are waxy esters of hydroxystearic acid such as stearyl alcohol or the reduction products of hydrogenated castor oil or its esters and ethers. The esterification products of hydrogenated oxygenated fatty acids with polyhydric alcohols such as glycol, diethylene glycol, sorbitol, pentaerythritol can also be used. Instead of hydrogenated castor oil or blown chinawood oil other hardened oxygenated oils may be used such as hydrogenated blown linseed oil, menhaden oil or sunflower seed oil. Brittleness in the products may be avoided by the addition of softeners such as soap, gums, resins and waxes. Drying oils such as linseed or chinawood oil and semi-drying oils like castor oil may be added, also resins, dammar, vinyl resins, acetone-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde and chlorinated diphenyl resins. Containers of wood, hemp, flax, silk &c. may be impregnated with the waterproofing materials or the elementary fibres may be treated before being made up into sheet form. The coated articles may be air dried or heated or drying accelerators may be added to the waterproofing material. Containers and wrappers may be used for holding lubricating oils, paints, latex, milk, butter, fish, sardines in oil, and other food products.
