420,130. Combined motion-picture and sound cameras. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA, 30, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, U.S.A. May 11, 1934, No. 14328. Convention date, May 11, 1933. [Class 40 (ii)] A combined motion-picture camera and sound recorder comprises an acoustic diaphragm 10 which vibrates a mirror 18 to modulate light projected from an optical system 36 by way of the mirror and of a reflecting system 40 and condenser 41 on to the photographic film 4, which is driven at uniform speed by the sprocket 3. The film is drawn from a supply 1 and is fed intermittently through the gate 5 of the camera. Light for sound recording is supplied by a lamp 30 illuminated by current from a dry battery 31 mounted in a box at the rear of the camera. The diaphragm may be mounted at the front, side or rear of the camera and is protected by a perforated cover 12. The modulating mirror 18 is carried by a light spring. The reflecting mirror 40 is partly blackened so that a sound record of varying width is produced by absorbing part of the length of the image of the slit 38, while a varying density sound record may be obtained by absorbing part of the width of the image, the mirror 18 being mounted to vibrate in a vertical plane in this case.
