Abstract
<PICT:0419849/III/1> A process for the continuous rectification of crude petroleum or other hydrocarbons consists in heating the material to be treated under moderate pressure, subjecting the material to a rectification under this same pressure, drawing off the various fractions separately from the reflux liquids obtained by rectification, and subjecting each of the heavier fractions to an expansion whereby the lighter parts of these fractions are liberated as vapours which are then condensed and collected separately, the heavier parts being also collected separately, while the lighter fractions of the rectification are simply condensed and collected separately. A pipe still B supplies crude petroleum vapour to a rectifying column A under a pressure of about 1 kilogram per sq. cm. The light fractions pass to coolers G<1>, G<2>, but the heavier fractions are led to expansion vessels D<3>--D<6>, at atmospheric pressure, the liberated vapours passing to condensers E<3>--E<6> and the remaining liquid portions passing to coolers G<3>--G<6>. In a modified apparatus, the crude petroleum is first freed of its lighter constituents in a rectifier working at atmospheric pressure, and then passes to a pipe still and a second rectifier working under pressure. Vapours from the second rectifier may be used as a heating agent in the first rectifier.
