Abstract

419,664. Securing articles on shafts. RENOLD & COVENTRY CHAIN CO., Ltd., and RENSHAW, A., Didsbury, Manchester. April 12, 1933, No. 10981. [Class 80 (ii).] In a ball-bearing component for bicycles, for example pedals or wheel hubs, of the kind having a bearing of the cup-and-cone type at each end, those of the cups and cones which are not integral with the hub and spindle respectively are secured to the hub and spindle in a manner which does not permit of adjustment of the bearings. Fig. 5 shows the application to a wheel hub 61 in which the cups 62 are formed with projections 64, Fig. 8, which are made by pressing obliquely into the outer surface of the cup a flat-ended tool to form depressions 66, the metal removed thereby forming the projections. After hardening, the cups are forced into the hub recesses, the projections scoring grooves 68 and forcing metal into the depressions 66 as at 70. The cones 72 are secured on the spindle 73 in a similar manner by forming projections in the bore of the cones and forcing them on the spindle. In the case of a pedal, Fig. 1, the cups 30, 32 are formed with shoulders 28 between which the hub 26 is secured by a press fit, and the cup 32 is secured in the plate 34 in the same way as the cup 62, Fig. 5, is secured to the hub 61. The inner cone is constituted by a shoulder 12 on the spindle 10 while the cone 16 is secured by forming projections in its bore by means of a tool pressed into the outer end of the bore, and forcing the cone on the spindle, the end of the spindle being riveted over so as to fill notches, formed by the tool. A dust cap 38, secured in the plate 36, is provided with an oil hole 42 closed by a resilient tongue 44. Specification 297,570, [Class 24], is referred to.
