Abstract

419,482. Game balls. INTERNATIONAL LATEX PROCESSES, Ltd., 10, Lefebvre Street, St. Peter's Port, Guernsey, TWISS, D. F., and McCOWAN, W., Fort Dunlop, Birmingham. Nov. 16, 1933, No. 31910. [Class 132 (ii).] Game balls, for example tennis balls, are made by depositing a liquid composition on a preferably spherical former to form a relatively thin elastic nucleus. After removal from the former, the aperture in the nucleus is closed, a coating of rubber is applied and the whole is vulcanized in a spherical mould. Finally the usual felt cover is added. Aqueous emulsions or dispersions of rubber are preferably used for both the nucleus and subsequent coating, and may consist of rubber, guttapercha, balata or similar vegetable resins. The nucleus may be removed from the former by stretching or the former may be of material which can readily be rendered plastic or liquid. The aperture in the nucleus may be sealed by tying, or by securing a cap thereover by rubber solution or latex, and the subsequent coating may be applied (1) by cupping, the operation being expedited by the use of a coagulant or otherwise (2) by winding with unvulcanized rubber tape produced by calendering or spreading. Inflating agents may be introduced into the nucleus before it is sealed, or subsequently at any stage by the hollow needle method in which case a rubber plug is secured to the inside of the nucleus. Preferably, agents are also introduced into the nucleus before closing for increasing the permeability of the rubber ball, and are spread to form a uniform lining before or after sealing of the nucleus. In one example the nucleus is formed by dipping a former into a compounded latex dispersion comprising rubber 92 parts, sulphur 2, zinc oxide 1, mineral oil 4 and accelerator 1 part, and then vulcanizing the dried deposit. The inside of the nucleus is covered with impermeable dope, for example, as described in Specification 416,679, [Group V], inflating agents are introduced, and a cap is secured over the aperture by a rubber or latex cement which vulcanizes at ordinary temperatures. The outside of the sealed nucleus is then coated with dope and allowed to stand, after which the winding or cupping operation is effected. Specifications 219,635 and 290,313, [both in Class 70], also are referred to.
