[Class 78 (i).] Plant for handling and bundling rolled bars which have been cut into lengths comprises a roller train 2 along which the bars pass from a shearing machine 1, a transverse conveyer 9 adapted to transfer the bars from the roller train to troughs or channels 18 on either or both sides of the roller train, the bars being bundled by hand adjacent the channels, and shoots 20 leading to other troughs or receivers where the bundles are collected for disposal. In the construction shown the bars are cut to a length determined by an adjustable stop 4 and are carried by the rollers 2 to any desired position where they are stopped by whichever of a number of stops 8 is raised. The transverse conveyer comprises a number of endless chains 9 passing over sprockets 10 on a shaft 11 and over idlers 17, the upper run of each chain being normally below the upper surfaces of the rollers 2. When the bars are to be transferred to either side the shaft 11 is rotated to drive the chains and cams 12 on the shaft act through members 13 on slides 14 to raise the upper runs of the chains into operative position to convey the bars to a channel 18. The channels 18 are formed with other channels in which the workman can bundle the bars as shown. The workman drops the handles into a shoot 20 which leads to a trough formed by pairs of pivoted plates 21 prevented from swinging apart by levers 23 controlled by linkage 25, 28, When a number of bundles have been collected between the plates 21 they are bundled together, and a cam 31 is rotated to allow the plates 21 to swing apart and drop the large bundle into a trough 30 from which the bundles are lifted by a hoist as shown at the right of Fig. 1. The channels 18 are pivotally mounted and can be swung out of the way to allow the bars to fall from the conveyer 9 either (1) into a trough 22, or (2), if a pivoted shoot 19 is interposed, direct on to the shoot 20 and plates 21.
