Abstract

418,032. Stapling. WRIGHT, W. E., Savile Lea, Savile Road, and FLEMING, BIRKBY, & GOODALL, Ltd., West Grove Mill, both in Halifax, Yorkshire. July 14, 1933, No. 19911. [Class 89 (iii).] A machine for making transmission belting &c. comprising means for inserting one or more longitudinal rows of staples through the superposed plies of material of which the belting is formed, includes means for feeding the belting, to a variable extent, step-by-step past the stapling elements, and means for adjusting the belting transversely of said elements. The machine comprises feeding elements 8, 9 for the staple wire 7 and a rocking lever 3 for actuating the clinching ram 4. The staples are driven upwardly through the belting and then clinched by the ram. The belting is fed by rollers 15, 16 journalled in uprights 13, 14 extending from a slide 12 which is adjustable across a work-table 10 by a screw 22 with handwheel 23. The roller 16 is rotated intermittently by a ratchet 25 and a pawl 26 driven from a crank 30 by linkage 28, 29 which is adjustable to vary the feed stroke. The upper roller 15 can be raised, against a spring 38, by eccentrics 35. In use, a length of belting is fed through whilst a row of staples is inserted, the slide 12 is then adjusted transversely by the screw 22, and the belting is again fed through for the insertion of a second, parallel, row of staples. The table 10 carries suitable guides for the belting and, preferably, is capable of swivelling to allow staples to be inserted obliquely.
