Abstract
417,566. Reaping and mowing machines. TAYLOR, A. M., O'Higgins 185, Hurlingham, Buenos Aires. April 20, 1934, No. 11967. [Class 6 (iii).] To cut the strong stems of weeds without damaging the more fragile growth of a desired crop a mower or reaper is provided with fingers fitted with resilient devices that depress the fragile crop below the knives but yield to the stiffer stems of the weeds. The finger, which is thicker vertically than usual, is formed with an opening 4 in which two vertical rods carrying rotary sleeves 7, 8 are mounted. Arms 9, 10 secured to the lower ends of the sleeves are normally held in a position at right angles to the finger by springs 15, 16, the tension of which may be adjusted. The springs and spindles may be covered by a plate 21. In a modification, the aperture for the spindles, arms and springs is formed in the lower side of the finger and in yet another form both yielding members are mounted on the same vertical rod.
