Abstract

417,047. Moulding pipes &c. in centrifugal machines. BATES, H. K., 42, Hawarden Avenue, Sefton Park, Liverpool. Feb. 16, 1933, Nos. 4724/33 and 2420/34. [Class 87 (ii).] In centrifugal machines for moulding hollow pipes, poles or columns from asphalt, concrete, clay, bitumin or other plastic material, moulds M, Fig. 1, are provided exteriorly with driven pulley rims F supported on and rotated by pairs of driving pulleys B having flanges engaging the rims F and positioning the moulds axially, and the moulds are maintained in position and pressed into driving contact by pairs of flanged pressure rollers E rotatably carried in a vertical line with the pulleys B by a vertically movable gantry C provided with means for holding it in adjustable fixed relationship to the pulleys B. The pulleys B are mounted on spindles 3, 3<1> on a bedplate A which may be inclined or horizontal. The gantry C is supported at one end in a framework 4 and is adjustably maintained in position by stays D. The pulleys B and rollers E are provided between their flanges with rims of yielding material which may be a refractory substance with a high coefficient of friction. The moulds M may be of various diameters and lengths and two or more sets of driving pulleys may be arranged in parallel to accommodate the various lengths of moulds. A long mould may then be provided with intermediate pulley rims engaging the intermediate driving pulleys. For articles shorter than the distance between two sets of pulleys, the mould may be adapted for two or more articles. The bearings 6 of the rollers E may have a spring connection with the gantry C. The parallel sets of pulleys B are driven from a common power shaft 13, Fig. 7, through belt gearing to each spindle 3<1> and thence belt or chain gearing to the spindles 3. The moulds may be carried on a truck running on rails 9 and having a rising and falling platform. In use, the gantry and rollers E are raised, the moulds are run in with the platform raised and are then lowered on the pulleys B and the gantry is lowered to press the mould rims into driving contact. After moulding, the platform is moved up to raise the moulds and gantry, the gantry is fixed in the raised position, the moulds are lowered slightly and removed on the truck. The moulds may be heated interiorly by gas burners or electric units on a stationary mandril having supply connections. In order to assist filling the moulds, they may be provided with a cylindrical perforated or wire gauze loading gauge G, Fig. 8, of external diameter slightly less than that of the bore of the article to be moulded. The mould may consist of a metal casing 20 in two halves having longitudinal flanges connected by a channel bar and rubber packing and the mould halves may be stiffened by longitudinal bars 22 and bar rings 23. The extremities may be shaped to form pipe sockets or column tops. The pulley rims F are formed with an annular disc f which is detachably bolted to an angle ring Q secured on the mould halves, the rims also serving to hold the halves together. Cross-bars S at the ends of the mould serve to centre and carry the gauge G. If two articles are to be moulded in one mould, an intermediate separating ring is provided. The intermediate pulley rims are formed on two parts having staggered contacting faces adapted to be secured together.
