[Class 29.] Absorption systems.-The generator - absorber of a reversing system employing a solid absorbent such as calcium chloride or strontium bromide, with ammonia or an amine as refrigerant, is charged with absorbent, either free of refrigerant or with only a portion, e.g. 20-28 per cent of the total working amount of refrigerant absorbed therein, and in such quantity that after it has absorbed the full amount of refrigerant it becomes compressed in the generator-absorber, but not to such an extent as to be impervious to the refrigerant vapour during operation. Preferably, the absorbent occupies the whole space of the generator-absorber under all conditions. Aluminium nitride, calcium oxide or other drying agent may be added to the absorbent to remove traces of moisture, and in the case of absorbents such as zinc chloride which are liable to become liquid, kieselguhr or calcium chloride may be added to maintain the absorbent in the solid form. Heat-conducting iron parts of the generator-absorber may be coated with copper, enamel or other substance inert to the refrigerant. The system may be air-cooled. The generator-absorber may be divided by apertured baffles 10, Fig. 2, and the vessel may be shaken while the charge is introduced through an end opening 6. When charged the end space 4 may be filled with aluminium wool &c. to prevent displacement of the absorbent, and the opening 6 is then sealed. In the vertical generator-absorber 21, Fig. 3, the absorbent in a molten condition is poured into the uppermost compartment and overflows through raised openings 20 from one tray 25 to the next below. The absorbent is saturated with refrigerant after the filling operation and swells up to occupy the spaces in the vessel.
