[Class 120 (i).] Apparatus for separating broken woody material, dirt, pectic matter, &c. from the fibres of bast plants comprises a number of pairs of cooperating rollers c, d, Figs. 1 and 2, each of which has protuberances p<2> in the form of hemispheres, cones or blunt pyramids or formed by axially extending ribs p corrugated at p<2> by the provision of circumferential gaps p<1>, a relative transverse axial or vibratory motion being imparted to the rollers c, d so as to subject the fibres to a transverse rubbing, rolling or vibratory action. Each succeeding upper roller is reciprocated oppositely to the one preceding. If desired the lower rollers may be reciprocated or both rollers may be reciprocated in opposite directions. The rollers of each pair are geared together by spur wheels j, j<1>. The bottom roller of the first pair is driven from the shaft g<1> through a lay shaft g<4> and chain and sprocket gearing i, i<1>, i<2>, the bottom rollers of the other pairs being driven therefrom through chain and sprocket gearing k, k<1>, k<2> ; l, l<1>, l<2>. The feed conveyer e is similarly driven through chain and sprocket gearing m, m<1>, m<2>, while the upper rollers c are reciprocated by eccentrics n on the shaft g<1>. In a modification the rollers are reciprocated by a cam groove and co-operating follower.
