Abstract

416,350. Embossing processes; embossing-surfaces. DUFAY, L., 123, Grande Rue, Besancon, Doubs, France. March 4, 1933, No. 6612. Convention date, March 31, 1932. [Class 100 (ii).] Iridescent and stereoscopic effects are produced by means of an embossing-member, such as a celluloid sheet 1, Figs. 1 and 2, having a grid-like surface comprising a series of straight, curved, or zig-zag grooves formed by sharp ridges 2 and polished faces 4, 5; the member being placed on the object to be decorated, such as a sheet of cardboard 7, Fig. 6, and pressure being applied locally mechanically or by means of a pointed burnisher to form complementary grooves 14 in part of the sheet, such as a triangle 10, after which the member 1 is rotated relatively to the sheet 7 and pressure is applied to form grooves 15 inclined to the grooves 14 and is subsequently turned into new positions to form grooves 16, 17 in areas 12, 13 respectively. The grooves are invisible to the naked eye and must therefore be very closely spaced where the object is to be viewed at ordinary reading distance but may be a centimetre apart or more in the case of advertisements. Instead of using a single member 1 to emboss the areas, a series may be used, e.g. one for each area, and where crossed grooves are required, the same area may be impressed twice or the member 1 may have crossed grooves. To provide increased decorative effects, the various areas may be differently coloured, e.g. with vitrifiable enamels, or the surface may be covered with reflecting material such as metal foil. Also, the embossed article may be reproduced by galvano-plastic methods or may be used as an embossing-die or to produce a matrix from which a die may be made. Fig. 10 shows a circle divided into areas by latitude and longitude lines 23, 22, the areas being embossed to provide grid lines 24-28 varying progressively in inclination from the central area of each band to the outer areas to produce a spherical effect. Fig. 10<a> (not shown) represents an opened hollow sphere with a cap. The embossing-member shown in Fig. 11 consists of a disc 30 set in an annular mount 31 which is provided with an operating knob 32 and a pointer 33 and is rotatably mounted in a graduated frame 34.
