Abstract

416,232. Roughening shoe soles. COMPO SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, 565, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A. Dec. 30, 1933, No. 36741. Convention date, June 29. [Class 83 (iii).] In a machine for roughening shoe soles the sole 61 is fed continuously past a rotary roughing-tool at a predetermined speed. A pulley 11 which may be driven from an electric motor (not shown) is connected to a pulley 12 on a spindle 13 carrying the tool 20 which comprises a number of roughing needles 21. The spindle is supported in a sleeve 15 which is screwed in to the casing 14 to provide axial spindle adjustment. Ball bearings are provided at 17, 18. The part 22 of the frame has threaded bores which receive adjustable sleeves 25, 34 respectively. The sleeve 25 encloses a slidable plunger 26 urged upwardly by an adjustable spring 33, the upward movement being limited by a cross pin 30 engaging under the sleeve. The plunger carries an axle fitted with a loose cylindrical wheel 29 adapted to engage beneath the work. The sleeve 34 is similarly fitted with a plunger carrying a frusto-conical wheel 39, which may fit against a bevelled edge 62 of the work. The pressure of the wheel 39 may be relieved by means of a rod 44 connected to a treadle. The work-supporting table 46 is resiliently mounted on springs 47<1> fitting around a number of posts 47, slidable in bores in the frame and screwed to receive adjusting nuts 47<11>. The rollers 29, 39 project through an aperture in the work table. A roller 49 serves as an edge guide for the work. A guide 50 is adjustably clamped to the frame by a stud 51 to control the depth of cut. The arm 53 of the frame is preferably hollow and is connected to a suction device for removing dust &c. from the working point. In order to feed the work automatically at a predetermined speed a worm 54 on the spindle is connected through gear 55, shaft 56, and gearing 57-59 to a roughened feed-roller 60 engaging the top surface of the work. In operation, the work is inserted and the needle guard adjusted to rest lightly thereon and the spindle 13 set to give the desired depth of scoring. The springs 33, 43 are adjusted so that the sole is pressed upwards against the feed wheel. While an unbevelled edge of the work such as the fore part is being traversed the roller 39 may yield, the spring pressure on this roller being if necessary relieved by the treadle mechanism. In a modification the tool spindle may be spring pressed against the work. In this case the feed wheel is preferably driven by an independent gear train from the pulley 11. In another modification the roller 39 may be replaced by a stationary support 39<1>, Fig. 4, having four supporting arms 69-72 each arm being provided with a bevelled work-engaging surface of different slope. Any one of the arms may be positioned to engage under the work according to the skived angle thereon.
