Abstract

416,168. Foam. HARRISON, A. H., Gold Pines, Ontario, Canada. July 14, 1933, No. 19929. [Class 47 (ii).] An aerated slurry of inorganic building materials such as cement, plaster of Paris, lime, or clay, is prepared by the process of agitation in an enclosed space under pressure in the presence of an emulsifying agent, characterized in that a product of predetermined density is formed by regulating the pressure to a predetermined amount. The slurry is admitted to the closed space to but partially fill the space, so that the volume of air in the agitating chamber is greater than that incorporated in the slurry. The relative volumes of air and unaerated slurry in the mixing chamber are preferably 2 : 1. The aerated slurry may be agitated after relieving the pressure to reduce the size of the cells. In a preferred form the apparatus comprises a chamber 1 containing shafts 2, carrying a plurality of agitator blades 3, which revolve at 270 r.p.m. and have the ends bent at right angles along the sides of the chamber to scrape and clean the inner walls. Slurry is fed in at inlet 5 by a pump, and discharged at outlet 7 by a pump 8 driven from shaft 10. Impellers 11 to accelerate the travel of the slurry are provided. Air is admitted under pressure at 12. A travelling belt 16 is provided to remove the unaerated slurry. The time of agitation is approximately 2 minutes. Examples are given showing the density of the slurry which may be produced under different conditions.
