[Class 126.] In a heating appliance, such as a water heater, comprising a combustion chamber with a tubular flue leading from it and means removably positioned in the end of the flue to restrict the flow of gases so as to obtain effective heat transfer through the flue from the products from a burner of less consumption rate than that for which the flue is designed, the flow restricting means produces two reversals of the whole of the gases before they are discharged. Fig. 3 shows one form of device which is removably inserted in the top of a water-heater flue, and comprises an outer shell 27 fitting within the flue, an inner shell 28 connected to it by a bottom plate 30, and an inverted cup member 29 supported by two crossed slotted plates 33 over the end of the shell 28. The gases pass up the central passage 32 and then down and up the pass - ages formed on the inside and outside of the cup member 29. A flanged top 37 provides a drip pan for condensate from a draughtdiverter (not shown) above it, the condensate passing into the flue through apertures 39 in the bottom plate 30. Fig. 6 shows a somewhat similar construction of device, but comprising also downdraught diversion means formed by an outer member 51 supported on a flange 50 on the wall 40 and having a top flange 53 for connection of the flue pipe. Downdraughts are deflected outwardly through lateral openings 54 in the member 51. Drainage apertures 57, 59 are provided. Specifications 312,981, [Class 75 (i)], and 375,833 are referred to.
