[Class 96.] The shake device 36, Fig. 1, and the means for operating it are movable in the longitudinal direction of the shake rail 50 of a Fourdrinier papermaking machine. The rails 50 carrying the table rolls 31 &c. are supported from beams 51 by laminated springs 52. Individual shake devices 36, also on laminated springs 53, e.g. for the breast roll, flow-box and table rolls 31, may be driven by individual motors or by chains &c. from a common shaft and are movable in slots 56 of a base-plate 55 e.g. by a rack and pinion 64, 65, Fig. 8. The wire part &c. may be subjected to the combined action of several shake devices individually adjusted as to stroke and frequency. The table rolls may be on sectionally divided shake rails 50<a>, Fig. 8, on the laminated springs 52 and may be resiliently interconnected or linked e.g. by single or laminated springs secured at both ends or at one end, by transverse spiral springs, rubber shackles, rubber aprons &c. Shake may be applied by a rod 54 and a clamp to the rail on the drive side which may be connected by resilient or pivoted ties or by a further rod to the tender's side ; the rails may be of small width and considerable depth, to allow yielding in the shake direction. The shake device 36 may comprise a gear weighted at 85, Fig. 21, and driving, by the bevel gears shown, a gear weighted at 90 the bevel 92 rotating about a shaft 94 which is connected with a worm wheel 97 turned by a worm 98 and hand-wheel &c. to vary the phase of rotation of the weights. Forces not in the required direction may be balanced by weights 105, 106 on gears meshing with the other gears, and the torque may be balanced by a further balanced pair of weighted gears 107, 108, which being keyed to their respective shafts need not mesh.
