Abstract
Intaglio printing-inks are prepared by dispersing in water containing a suspended colouring-matter, a solution of asphalt in a benzine hydrocarbon of high boiling-point, with the aid of a dispersing agent derived from a high-molecular water-insoluble organic compound containing at least one reactive hydrogen atom by the introduction of a chain containing a number of O.C2H4 groups, e.g. tetraethylene glycol ether radicle, or consisting of a condensation product from an aliphatic or cyclo-aliphatic carboxylic acid and an organic amino or hydroxyl sulphonic acid. The hydrocarbons may boil at between 100 and 200 DEG C., preferably between 130 and 180 DEG C. and have a flash point above 30 DEG C. The dispersing agent may be of the kind produced by the interaction of alkylene oxides or polyglycols with compounds containing more than six and preferably more than 10 C atoms, e.g. ricinoleic, oleic, stearic, or palmitic acid, an acid produced by oxidizing paraffin hydrocarbons and containing at least nine C atoms, or alcohols or amines containing at least nine C atoms, e.g. decyl, dodecyl, or octodecyl alcohol or amine, or amides of the carboxylic acids mentioned. According to the Provisional Specification, mineral oil sulphonates may be used. The finished ink may contain 30 per cent or more of water and 0,5 to 10 per cent of dispersing agent. According to examples, gilsonite dissolved in a benzine hydrocarbon boiling between 130 and 180 DEG C. is emulsified with (a) a suspension of the aluminium hydroxide lake of Vesuvin in water containing the condensation product of ethylene oxide and oleic acid prepared according to Specification 380,431; (b) a suspension of Pigment Black B, Carbon black, or Milan Blue in water containing the reaction product of ethylene oxide and dodecyl alcohol prepared according to Specification 380,431; (c) the reaction product of oleic acid and hydroxyethane sulphonic acid or N-methyl taurine (d) a suspension of the aluminium hydroxide lake of Vesuvin in water containing the reaction product of ethylene oxide and dodecylamine prepared according to Specification 380,851, the reaction product of ethylene oxide and hydroxyalkyl amides produced by acting with the chlorides of the acids of coconut oil on ethanol amine prepared according to Specification 380,851, or the sodium salt of the reaction product of oleic acid chloride and hydroxyethane sulphonic acid; or (e) water containing pigment green paste and the reaction product of oleic acid and alkylene oxide or the reaction product of oleyl alcohol and ethylene oxide. Inorganic pigments or soluble dyestuffs such as Sudan Brown may also be used. Specifications 341,053, 343,524, and 343,899 also are referred to.
