Abstract

A method of manufacturing moulded or otherwise shaped articles such as sheets, tiles, pipes, electric fuse handles, &c. from inorganic binding-agents, with or without fillers, in which one or more easily oxidizable oils are incorporated in the articles either by impregnation after shaping or by incorporation in the mixture of ingredients before shaping, is characterized by subjecting the articles, after shaping and after the binding-agent has set, to a heat treatment to oxidize and/or polymerize the oils. The binding-agent may be Portland cement, or other hydraulic binding-agent or plaster, the oils may be linseed, rape, or china wood, and the fillers asbestos, animal or vegetable fibres, wood pulp, or mineral aggregate. In an example, grey sheets 1/2 inch thick, made from Portland cement, asbestos, and a little powdered bitumen by moulding under a pressure of 3 tons to the square inch, are allowed to mature, dried by heating at 100 DEG C. for 12 hours and then 188 DEG C. for 18 hours, and placed in a steam-heated autoclave, which may be first evacuated of air, where they are impregnated with linseed oil under a pressure of from atmospheric to 50 lbs. per square inch for 12 hours. The sheets are removed, may be allowed to drain and air-dry for a few days, and are placed in an oven at 80 DEG C. at which temperature they are kept for 24 hours. The temperature is then gradually raised during two hours to 350 DEG C., maintained there for two hours, and finally raised to 500 DEG C. and kept there for an hour. Preferably, before or after the heat treatment a flame is applied to the surface of the sheets, burnt oil being formed and sealing the surface. For very thin sheets-e.g. 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick-the heat treatment may consist in subjecting them to the action of a flame. Impregnants other than the oils, such as bitumen, pitch or synthetic resin, may be incorporated in the articles at any stage of manufacture.
