Abstract

<PICT:0413832/IV/1> Apparatus for making seamless casings of regenerated cellulose from viscose, cuprammonium cellulose, or other solutions comprises an annular extrusion nozzle and a detachable and collapsable mandrel which is preferably expanded by means of a non-compressible fluid such as water. The mandrel may be deflated or removed when starting the operation but as soon as the tube of regenerated cellulose issues from the annular orifice and is taken up by the rollers in the precipitating bath, the mandrel is inserted through the top of the nozzle and inflated to the required size. This may be effected by the introduction of a measured quantity of liquid. As shown in Fig. 1 an annular nozzle A is arranged in a coagulating bath F. A collapsable former C consisting of a rubber envelope is kept in position by a tube I through which liquid for inflating the former is introduced. Precipitating liquid fed through the pipe E bathes the interior of the extruded tube J. An overflow D is provided for removal of excess precipitating liquid. The extruded tube J passes round the rollers K.
