Abstract
<PICT:0494867/IV/1> In the production of artificial silk, films, &c. by extrusion of solutions of cellulose in sulphuric acid into a coagulating bath, a layer or jet of the solution is squirted into the coagulation bath 3 in a horizontal or practically horizontal direction and is then taken up by the upper part of a bearing surface 6 slightly spaced from the extrusion nozzle 2 so that the extruded material is superficially coagulated on all sides before being taken up by the bearing surface in order to be coagulated further. The bearing surface may be an endless conveyer of stainless steel or rubber or it may be formed by the upper part of a rotating drum; it may be perforated. The cellulose solution may be obtained as described in Specification 395,947, and is preferably extruded at a pressure of more than 2 kilograms per sq. cm. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also refers to the extrusion of viscose solutions. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
