Abstract

Beer is clarified by means of metal foils or thin sheets of parchment, pasteboard, or compressed paper material of any kind, of substantially less than 0,4 mm. thickness. The foils or sheets may be provided with a coating of resin, pitch, varnish, or other substance adapted to improve the taste of the beer, and thin sheets of card, pasteboard, or parchment provided with a metal coating may also be employed. Metals specified as suitable are aluminium, silver, nickel, or any non-rusting metal. The surface of the foils may be corrugated and/or roughened and perforated, especially with perforations of the kind found in rasp-sieves and produced by stamping. Aluminium foil provided with creases or corrugations and made into rolls is mentioned as particularly suitable, but the foils or sheets may also be placed in the cask in the form of single short strips or as ribbon or wound on wire or sheet metal frames. The chips are placed in the cask before filling, float to the surface when the beer is introduced, and sink down gradually afterwards, thus clarifying successive layers of the liquid. The foils or sheets may be destroyed after use.
