Abstract

413,401. Television. BULLIMORE, W. R., and BEDFORD, L. H., Cossor Works, Highbury Grove, London. Feb. 7, 1933, No. 3743. [Class 40 (iii).] In a television system in which the scanning and reconstruction of an image is effected by varying the speed of the scanning spot in accordance with the variations of the light intensity of different parts of the image, means are incorporated for modulating the intensity of the scanning spot at the receiver for the purpose of intensifying the received image. At the darker portions of the picture the scanning spot does not move at the speeds theoretically required to produce the dark portions of the image contrasted correctly with respect to the light portions, and in the arrangements described the intensity of the cathode beam is decreased as the rate of change of the scanning voltage increases. In Fig. 2 the incoming scanning voltage is applied to the grid of a valve V having in its plate circuit an inductance L and a full wave rectifier W; and the voltage produced across a resistance R is proportional to the rate of change of the voltage on the grid of the valve V or to the scanning velocity. The voltage across R is fed through condenser C1 to the grid of a valve V1 in whose plate circuit is a resistance R2 from which a tapping is taken to the modulating electrode of the cathode-ray tube. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 3, the scanning voltage is applied to the grids of valves V1, V2 operating in paraphase. The plate circuits are connected to the plates PX1, PX2 of the oscillograph and the resistances R1, R2 are joined by an inductance L to which is coupled a centre-tapped inductance L1. The voltages across the two portions of the inductance are applied to the grids of valves V3, V4 forming a balanced rectifier arrangement, and from a tapping on a resistance R34 a voltage proportional to the rate of change of the scanning voltage is applied to the modulating electrode of the cathode ray tube. The voltage applied to the modulating electrode of the cathode-ray tube is independent of the sign of the velocity and the intensity of the cathode beam is reduced during the fly-back at the end of a line or picture. Specifications 396,422 and 399,469 are referred to.
