Abstract

Water or other aqueous liquid is filtered through non-porous material, such as sand or fine gravel, with which pulverulent or fine grained adsorptive material has been mixed. Suitable adsorptive materials include active carbon, silica gel, fuller's earth, kieselguhr, coal, brown-coal, peat, bone black, coke or charcoal. The removal of certain impurities, for example sulphuretted hydrogen, from the liquid may be promoted by mixing air with the liquid before filtration or by passing air into the filter while filtration is taking place. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 described also the application of the process in the refining of animal, vegetable or mineral oils. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Sugar solutions are filtered through nonporous material, such as sand or fine gravel, with which pulverulent or fine grained adsorptive material has been mixed. Suitable adsorptive materials include active carbon, silica gel, fullers' earth, kieselguhr, coal, brown-coal, peat, bone black, coke or charcoal. The removal of certain impurities, may be promoted by mixing air with the liquid before filtration or by passing air into the filter while filtration is taking place.
